World Cup tips and predictions for Russia 2018. Who will follow Germany as World Cup winners? Read on for all the latest World Cup 2018 betting odds, predictions and tips.
Russia 2018 is the 21st edition of football’s biggest international tournament, with 32 teams bidding to lift the famous golden trophy in Moscow on July 15.
If Germany can defend the title it would be their fifth triumph, putting them ahead of Brazil as the most successful team in World Cup history by virtue of also reaching the final on four other occasions.
The action will take place over a 32-day period from June 14-July 15 and it is the first ever World Cup to be held in Eastern Europe, with 11 Russian cities including Moscow, St Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi and Kazan all scheduled to stage matches.
The format is the same as at other recent World Cups with the 32 teams divided into eight groups of four and the top two finishers advancing to the knockout stage. This will change in 2026 when 48 nations are due to contest the finals.
As hosts, Russia have qualified automatically and will contest the first match of the tournament straight after the opening ceremony at the Luzhniki Stadium - which is also the venue for the final - on Thursday June 14 against one of their Group A rivals, kicking off at 16:00 BST.
Typically, for TV viewers in western Europe, matches will start in the afternoon or early evening.
Brazil became the second team to book their place, doing so with four matches of the South American qualifying campaign to spare, reaching the finals much more easily than their arch-rivals Argentina.
Holders Germany were among the more impressive qualifiers from Europe, while England will be hoping to improve on their recent disappointing showings at major tournaments having failed to make it out of their group at Brazil 2014.
